Sermons for Holy Week 2019

We are proud to present a compilation of this year's Holy Week sermons from some of the best preachers in the Episcopal Church. It is our sincere hope that as you read these sermons—alone, in a small group, over coffee in a crowded shop, or in a quiet place—you would take stock of the reality of this most important story. While you read, we hope you would see the ways that Jesus entered and continues to enter this noisy, chaotic, confusing, beautiful, and beloved world.

Protesters
Written by the Rev. Anna Tew

The Sunday of the Passion

Today is the first day of Holy Week and the last Sunday in Lent, known as Palm Sunday or the Sunday of the Passion. The day begins by marking Christ’s triumphal entry into Jerusalem. Many churches participate in the Liturgy of the Palms, first offered in The Episcopal Church in the 1960 Book of Offices. In this liturgy, the celebrant blesses palms or other branches, and, following a reading from the Gospels, leads the congregation in procession into their church—often singing “All Glory, Laud, and Honor” or “Ride On! Ride On In Majesty!” read more

Gospel Lesson Plans

Palm Sunday
Gathered in our comfortable churches, we struggle to let the difficult words of the Crucifixion land anywhere in our psyches. Would any of us have been there, or would we have waited for the news to reach us? Had we shown up, would we have demanded that Barabbas be released instead of Jesus? Would we have stood with the few at the foot of the cross? What time will we scrounge in the week ahead to pause and squint at the grace of this awesome love... read more

The Suffering Servant
It is Palm Sunday! Isaiah 50:4-9 is read in all three lectionary years, regardless of which Gospel account is given. This reflects the long understanding of the Christian church that Jesus is the suffering servant described in Isaiah... read more
