Prof. Dr. Hans Bakker

Profile

PhD in Solid State Physics (VU Amsterdam, 1985). Joined Shell Research as a research physicist. Developed towards general management roles by further assignments in the business, roles in engineering and in operations. Final role was Vice-President Contracting and Procurement for Projects. Involved in improving project management performance/success since 2002, first in Shell and now full-time at TUD. In his free time he is a model railroad builder and loves to ski.

Research

The ambition of the chair management of engineering projects is to contribute to the measurable improvement of the performance of both engineering and infrastructure projects. This vision is driven by the firm belief that the performance of projects as delivered via project management should and can be improved. It is unbelievable that after 60 years of project management still 40% of projects are not delivered according to plan. This score is even worse for megaprojects (70%). How can we adapt and improve the management of projects to improve the performance?
