Libraries across the city are helping Manchester residents apply for ID to enable them to vote.

In 2023 the UK Government introduced a requirement for voters to show photo ID when voting at a polling station at some elections.

You may already have a form of photo ID that is acceptable.  You can use any of the following:

  • Passport
  • Driving licence (including provisional license)
  • Blue badge
  • Certain concessionary travel cards
  • Identity card with PASS mark (Proof of Age Standards Scheme)
  • Biometric Immigration document
  • Defence identity card
  • Certain national identity cards

See the full list of acceptable ID on the Electoral Commission website.

If you don’t already have an accepted form of photo ID, or you’re not sure whether your photo ID still looks like you, you can apply for a free voter ID document, known as a Voter Authority Certificate.  You can do that online or by post here.

You must be registered to vote before applying for the voter ID.  The deadline for applications is 24th April.

If you need help and support to apply online, or you don’t have access to a digital device to get online, we can help.

Local libraries are holding support sessions where staff will be on hand with mobile devices to walk you through the applications process and help you take and upload a photograph. These sessions are listed here.

Do you have the Internet at home, and want support completing the form?

Email the libraries digital inclusion team at digitalinclusion@manchester.gov.uk or text 07860 064128, and we’ll ring you and talk you through the form.
