Upcoming Production

'The Mannequin'

'The Mannequin' is a multimedia production, written and directed by Sam Kindon, which fuses elements of film, theatre, music, fashion and drag. It focuses on seven characters, all of them working in the creative industries. The play examines what pushes them to create as well as their relationships with one another. Act I details the buildup to a traumatic runway show, with Act II following them into a cabaret/drag bar a few months later where they come to terms with the consequences and begin the healing process. The plays seeks to explore the themes of ego, queerness and the creative industries, as well as femme and female oppression.

The play is centred around a dressmaker's mannequin which remains on stage for the whole piece. It serves as a blank canvas which is at once anonymous and disposable, allowing the characters to project their own fractured ideas of self onto it. Each character has their own relationship with the mannequin, whether it be a visual interaction or through monologue. The mannequin is a manifestation of the "artistic muse", it will be used to demonstrate why the characters do what they do, as well as inspire them and propel them towards exploring their own identities and insecurities.

                           December 2017

A young man is cursed with the uncanny ability to remain both young and beautiful while descending into a life of heartless debauchery. His face shows no sign of the sins he has committed for they are all contained upon the face of a portrait that displays the true repugnance of Dorian’s corrupted soul. The play explores issues of sexuality, gender and art through Dorian’s interactions with devoted painter, Basil, his friend Lord Henry and the enchanting actress Sibyl Vane. Dorian’s endless youth proves to corrupt his soul and poison all those who surround him.

A sense of restlessness and alienation pervades the work of Die Brucke, the German art movement which surfaced at the start of the 20th century. In this play, we follow the key founders and members of the group from the confines of baroque Dresden, to the sterile clinics of the Alps and up to Berlin, notorious womb of the avant garde. The links between the artistic and the political are explored, as well as the representation of women in the arts in this piece of new writing.

Does mental illness go hand in hand with creativity? Or is this notion overly romanticised? Can we unzip our previous skins and leave everything behind entirely for a new identity in a new town? Does art really mirror life?
