PROFILE
Dr Vu Trinh is a Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) in Accounting & Finance at Newcastle University Business School (NUBS), UK, and co-leads a research cluster focused on finance, governance, and sustainability. In addition, Dr Trinh holds the position of Visiting Professor of Finance and Senior Research Fellow at the University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City (UEH - Vietnam), and serves as the Deputy Director of the Finance and Banking Network within AVSE Global. Dr Trinh's contributions to the field have been acknowledged through several awards, including the "Outstanding Researcher of the Year - Accounting and Finance - ECRs" at NUBS in 2022 and the 2023 "Interstellar" award from AVSE Global, which honours the member with the most ground-breaking ideas of the year. Furthermore, Dr Trinh has received multiple nominations for The Education Awards (TEAs), including "Outstanding Contribution to Teaching" in 2023 & "Research Supervisor of the Year" in 2024, and for The Rising Star Award of The Year 2021 (Alumni, Newcastle University).
Dr Trinh's research contributes to sustainable finance, banking, and governance, with almost 40 publications in top-tier journals, reports, and authored/ edited book published by Springer. Some journals (4*/3* ABS journals) include British Journal of Management (4-ABS), Annals of Tourism Research (4-ABS), European Journal of Finance (3*-ABS), Journal of International Financial Markets, Institutions and Money (3*-ABS), International Review of Financial Analysis (3*-ABS), International Journal of Finance and Economics (3*-ABS), Accounting Forum (3*-ABS), Journal of International Accounting, Auditing and Taxation (3*-ABS), Review of Quantitative Finance and Accounting (3*-ABS), and Business Strategy and the Environment (3*-ABS). Dr Trinh also serves on editorial boards and as a referee for numerous prestigious journals, reflecting their academic leadership. These positions include roles as a Section Editor (equivalent to Editor-in-Chief of some journals), Associate/Academic Editor, Guest Editor, Book Editor, and Advisory Board Member.
Dr Trinh's research endeavours have received support in the form of grants and funding, totalling approximately £200,000. Notably, Dr Trinh recently secured £90,000 in funding from the Climate Compatible Growth (CCG) programme's Flexible Research Fund (FRF) for their project titled "Macroeconomic Implications of Transitions to Low-Carbon Energy in Vietnam." This project is scheduled to run for 15-18 months, spanning from 2024 to 2025. Another project has successfully secured funding from Nafosted. This climate risk project represents a collaborative effort between teams from the UK, including Newcastle University and the University of Bristol, and Vietnam, with the participation (lead) of UEH University. In the past, Dr Trinh served as the principal investigator at NUBS for a consultancy project titled "Responsible Business Conduct and Sustainable Investment in ASEAN," which received funding of EUR 28,000 (approximately £25,000) from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). This initiative culminated in the development of a significant and impactful report that made substantial contributions to the promotion of sustainable business practices in the ASEAN region. Dr Trinh is currently engaged in collaborations with colleagues from several institutions, such as the University of Oxford, University of Southampton, University of Huddersfield, and University of Portsmouth, along with industry partners, to pursue large funding bids for interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary projects related to sustainability.
Dr Trinh's research has made some impact within the academic community, evident in growing increase in citations, downloads, and popularity of their work within various journals. For instance, one of Dr Trinh's papers has consistently ranked among the most cited, downloaded, and popular articles in the Journal of International Financial Markets, Institutions, and Money (3* ABS) since 2018. Similarly, another of Dr Trinh's articles has been one of the most cited papers published in the European Journal of Finance (3* ABS) over the three years spanning from 2020 to 2022. P-Rank has named Dr Trinh in the top 1000 best-ranked authors within the UK (e.g., #243 ABS-based since 2022 and #291 since 2020), and Europe. Moreover, Dr Trinh's research findings have been presented at prestigious conferences, including the IFABS Oxford Conference, the British Accounting and Finance Association (BAFA), the Financial Management Association (FMA), and the European Accounting Association (EAA). These findings have also been disseminated by international organisations such as the OECD and WHO.
As a qualified educator, Dr Trinh has been selected to join the Advisory Group of the QAA (Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education) for the review of the 'Finance' Subject Benchmark Statement 2024-25. Subject Benchmark Statements describe the nature of study and the academic standards expected of graduates in specific subject areas. They show what graduates might reasonably be expected to know, do and understand at the end of their studies.

CURRENT WORK
Dr Trinh's primary research expertise and interests revolve around three key areas: financial risks and banking, encompassing market risks and risk management; corporate governance, encompassing traditional, sustainable, and digital aspects; and corporate financial strategies and corporate sustainability, with a specific emphasis on sustainable finance and sustainable financial markets.
Dr Trinh's research endeavours aim to provide innovative and actionable insights for businesses, contributing to the development of a sustainable economy and society. This is achieved through extensive analysis of a diverse cross-country dataset that encompasses international crises, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of the dynamics at play in these critical contexts.
