Please note that the side-event is taking place at the ECOSOC Chamber (UNHQ), 6:15 - 7:30pm, followed by a reception at the Ford Foundation Center for Social Justice (320 E 43rd St), 7:30 - 9pm. Background

SDG16+ on peaceful, just and inclusive societies highlights two fundamental principles of the 2030 Agenda – ‘universality’ and ‘leave no one behind.’ SDG16+ targets are universal – all countries have room to improve on peace, justice, and inclusion. At the same time, SDG16+ targets draw attention to the needs of people, communities, and societies that face the greatest risk of being left behind due to violence, injustice, exclusion, and poor governance. To create the future that we want, we need to act together now to showcase ‘what works’ to achieve progress on SDG16+ at all levels, galvanize political will for investment in evidence-based actions, and empower all, including young people, to accelerate progress on SDG16+ and all of the SDGs.

Objectives:

  • Highlight the importance of SDG16+, its interlinkages to all SDGs, and as an enabler of the 2030 Agenda.

  • Celebrate successful national experiences of SDG16+ in action—including as highlighted in the VNRs.

  • Galvanize political will and forward-looking, multi-stakeholder commitments to accelerate SDG16+ implementation in the next four-year cycle of the 2030 Agenda.
