photonics in 5 minutes!

International day of women and girls in science

february 11, 2022

10:30 CET

Immerse yourself in the world of photonics thanks to 4 ICFO female scientists, who will tell in 5 minutes in an attractive and inspiring way why photonics is important for their research and society in general. You can also send them your questions about science and their careers.

This event is aimed at students between 9th and 12th grade (second cycle of ESO and bachillerato) and will be in Spanish.

Photonics in 5 minutes! is organized in the framework of ICFO Women in Science Month to celebrate the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, joining the Iniciativa 11 de Febrero.

General information

10:30-10:40:  Welcome and introduction to ICFO and photonics

10:40-11:00: Flash talks by the speakers

11:00-11:30: Q&A session – the speakers will answer live the questions from the audience.

The event will be on YouTube Live. You don’t need any additional program or app to stream the event and interact with us: you just need a computer with internet connection.

You can send us your questions in advance at outreach@icfo.eu or write them in the live chat during the event.

If you’re attending the event with your students from the school, we have some additional recommendations:

  • Connect the computer to a large screen so that the students can have a better view.
  • Connect external speakers to the computer in order to improve the audio quality.

SPEAKERS

María García-Parajo

María García-PARAJO

ICREA Professor at ICFO

María García-Parajo is an ICREA Research Professor at ICFO, leading the Single Molecule Biophotonics group. Her research interests lie at the interface between Physics, Photonics and Biology. To date she has published more than 180 papers. She coordinates several international research projects, and is member of various international scientific advisory, executive and editorial boards. She has received several prestigious awards, including the Bruker Prize of the Spanish Biophysics Society (2017), AdvERC grant (2017) and Emmy Noether Distinction from the European Physical Society (2020). Maria is actively involved in (inter)national actions to promote gender equity in Science.

Joana Fraxenet

Joana fraxanet morales

PhD student at ICFO

Joana Fraxanet studied a double degree in physics and mathematics at the University of Barcelona and obtained her Master’s degree at the University of Leiden in 2017. Since then, she has been doing her doctoral thesis at ICFO in the Quantum Optics Theory group. She is currently researching the properties of many-particles quantum systems, focusing on the study of exotic phases with topological properties in the context of cold atoms for quantum simulation. She is also interested in the development of quantum algorithms for the study of many-body quantum systems.

Blanca Belsa

blanca belsa

PhD student at ICFO

Blanca Belsa studied chemistry at the Sarriá Chemical Institute (IQS) in Barcelona and obtained her master’s degree at Pompeu Fabra University in 2019. She is currently developing her doctoral thesis at ICFO in the photon-accelerated CO2 mitigation group. Her research focuses on the development of technologies to convert CO2 into value-added chemicals, such as carbon monoxide (CO), formic acid (HCOOH), methane (CH4), methanol (CH3OH) and C2+ hydrocarbons such as ethylene (C2H4 ) or ethanol (C2H5OH), using renewable energy sources.

Federica Beduini

federica beduini

Outreach team at ICFO

Federica Beduini obtained her PhD in Photonics with a project on experimental quantum physics at ICFO. Since 2015, she has been part of ICFO’s outreach team.
She is currently coordinating the citizen science experiments, like the BIG Bell Test and NightUp, and the outreach activities directed to the general public and schools, such as the Young Photonic Congress.
