why playful mindfulness now?

Life swirls with uncertainty and stress. It can be easy in all that chaos to lose touch with a more grounded, joyful center.

Playful Mindfulness gently combines the insights of traditional mindfulness—paying attention to the present moment with curiosity and kindness—with the gifts of improvisation—connecting with others to tap into creativity, collaboration and resilience.

Hundreds of Playful Mindfulness students at Stanford and elsewhere have learned that shared practice can build a strong sense of delightful community. Now’s your chance to experience the insight, humor, and eye-opening activities—you’ve never been in a Zoom gathering like this!

In these 6 weeks, you’ll learn how to:

  • how you relate to “failure” so you rebound quickly and enthusiastically
  • train your mind’s focus with patient, kind, and firm repetition
  • develop an attitude of kindness and curiosity toward every experience
  • turn off autopilot and turn on a fuller range of experience and expression
  • unhitch from self-sabotaging stories so your mind stays nimble in the present moment
  • choose from a range of nuanced responses rather than relying on hair-trigger reactions

Warning: this course may leave you feeling more confident, calm, and connected. Do not register and attend unless you’re willing to accept more resilient delight in your life. ; )

how the course works

Playful Mindfulness integrates traditional mindfulness instruction with the vitality and insight of improvisational theatre.

Formal and informal practices strengthen the awareness “muscle” and bring that awareness to daily life: when we’re eating, driving, dating, arguing, working—or improvising.

Shared inquiry uses small and large group discussions to draw experienced-based wisdom from each participant in service to the group.

Playful exercises give us the chance to experience firsthand the skills we’re exploring—and to laugh while doing it.

To support your learning, the online version of the course includes:

  • six classes conducted through Zoom software (works best if participants have a quiet, concentrated space)
  • 15-30 minutes of daily home practice

    WHo is the course for?

    playful mindfulness is perfect for…

    • recovering perfectionists who want to lighten up
    • adult learners stepping into the stress and uncertainty of life’s transitions: leaving or starting a job, letting go of a relationship, making a big move
    • people who struggle with anxiety or want more confidence
    • parents who want more patience with their children
    • leaders who want to model calm, confidence and collaboration
    • introverts who long for connection and want more of an impact
    • people considered abrasive or reactive and who actually want to put others at ease
    • improvisors or actors who want to add depth and presence to their on-stage work
    • mindfulness students or practitioners who want a new, playful perspective

    a word about INCLUSIVITY

All committed and kind learners are most welcome in the Playful Mindfulness course.

We especially welcome those from all historically disadvantaged populations – People of Color (POC), LGBTQIA, those with disabilities, first- or second-generation immigrants, and more. Again, we want everyone to have access to the Playful Mindfulness way of being in the world.
