"He who fears he shall suffer, already suffers what he fears”, Montaigne told us.

But what do we fear, and what is there to fear? Is fear the same as anxiety? Can fear be overcome – or should it?  Can it be useful or healthy? How may it be used or abused?

Join us for an interdisciplinary conversation drawing on art, philosophy and psychoanalysis to explore these questions and their bearing on our world today.

Speakers:

Caterina Albano is a curator and a Reader at Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London. She holds a PhD in Renaissance Studies (London University) and curates, lectures and publishes in the fields of art, cultural history and cultural theory and theory of curating. She is the author of Memory, Forgetting and the Moving Image, and Fear and Art in the Contemporary World, and has published journal articles and essays on the history of emotion, memory and contemporary art, anatomy and on curating.

Sacha Golob is a Senior Lecturer in Philosophy at King’s College London. He is the Director of the Centre for Philosophy and Visual Art and Editor of the British Journal for the History of Philosophy. He has published extensively on French and German philosophy and the philosophy of art. His current research looks at contemporary conceptions of degeneration, transformation and virtue.

William Badenhorst is a psychoanalyst with the British Psychoanalytical Society, a psychiatrist in private practice, and Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at Imperial College London.

Chair: Alla Rubitel is a psychoanalyst with the British Psychoanalytical Society, a consultant psychiatrist in the NHS and Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at Imperial College London.
