What is the PGF Twitter Conference?
This conference is an opportunity for PhD students in geography and related disciplines to share their research with the wider geography community on Twitter.
We recognise that many people will have been preparing materials for conferences that have now been postponed or cancelled, and so we decided to run this event in the absence of such conferences (for example, the RGS-IBG Annual International Conference). If you have work you’d like to share which you had planned to present at any conference, or indeed any new findings you’d like to share with the academic world, please consider applying to present!
How does it work?
Participants will be grouped into sessions with others carrying out research in a similar field. You’ll be given 15 minutes to share 5 tweets which showcase your work, and 15 minutes to respond to any comments in a ‘live’ Q&A. With just 280 characters per Tweet, you’ll need to think about creative ways of demonstrating your findings, for example by creating a short video or GIF to accompany your text. If your application is successful, we will send a detailed presenters’ guide to ensure you’re well prepared to share and discuss your research with as wide an audience as possible!
We will be using a specific conference hashtag: #PGFTC2020, and you should include this in all of your tweets. By following this hashtag, you’ll be able to see all the tweets from every participant and network with others across the world!
If you do not want to present, but would like to follow the conference, please search for #PGFTC2020 to see all posts related to the conference. The @PGF_RGSIBG Twitter account will be chairing the conference, so please follow them too to receive the latest updates, announcements and schedules. We will be publishing an ‘Audience Participation’ guide in due course; interacting with presenters and other spectators is a really important part of the conference, so we’d encourage you to retweet and comment as much as you can!
What if I don’t know how to use Twitter?
If you’re new to Twitter, or would like further information on how to get the most out of Twitter, please refer to the guides below:
Setting up a Twitter account

Once you’ve set up an account and know your way around the site, it’s a good idea to search for people and organisations to follow. Some suggestions include: @PGF-RGSIBG, @RGS_IBG, and @RGS_IBGhe. Your university and department may also have accounts which you can search for. You can then search people who follow these accounts to find more people you know, or people with whom you share common interests.
If you have any questions about setting up an account or navigating Twitter, please get in touch with us at rgsibgpgforum@gmail.com.
How do I apply?
Applications are welcome from all students currently completing a PhD in Geography or a related discipline. Please send your name, contact details, institution and an abstract of no more than 200 words to rgsibgpgforum@gmail.com by Friday 24th July 2020. To help us create a schedule, we would be grateful if you could also indicate your preferred time and date in your application.
If your application is successful, we will get in touch with your session time in the week commencing 27th July 2020. Please note that whilst we will endeavour to ensure your request is met, we will not be able to accommodate all timetabling requests.
