60 Years of Mining in Q’eqchi’ Territories
INCO / Skye Resources / Hudbay Minerals / Solway Investment Group

Canadian mining companies - INCO, Skye Resources, Hudbay Minerals - controlled a huge swath of Mayan Q’eqchi’ territories in eastern Guatemala, from the early 1960s (soon after the US-orchestrated coup of 1954 brought to power a military-backed ‘open-for-global-business’ regime) to 2011 when Hudbay sold its interests to the Swiss-based Solway Investment Group.

Repeatedly over the years, communities have suffered forced evictions and destruction of homes; killings, rapes, shootings; criminalization of community defenders; health and environmental harms.

As part of Rights Action’s work in support of the community defense struggles of the Q’eqchi’ people, there are also precedent setting lawsuits in Guatemala and Canada, seeking justice for some of the repression linked to Hudbay Minerals and Skye Resources.
