Please follow the below instructions carefully; failure to do so may result in your application not being considered for the Centre.
Application Instructions
1. You should make an application via the application portal at:

Under “Apply for Doctoral courses”, click on “Apply now”. You will need an account in the Imperial Gateway system.
- Select “Postgraduate Research”
- Course type “Doctoral”
- Academic programme: “Safe and Trusted Artificial Intelligence (PhD)”
- Entry term: “Autumn 2023/24”
Upon filling the application:
- In the “Proposed Research Topic” field, include the code(s) of your chosen projects with lead supervisors at Imperial College London (for example “STAI-CDT-2022-IC-01, IC-02, …”). If you are proposing your own project and have identified a potential supervisor from Imperial College London who you would like to work with on this, you should include the code “STAI-CDT-2022-OWN-PROJECT”.
- In the “Proposed Research Supervisor” field, enter the Imperial College lead supervisors for the projects you are applying for (e.g., “Dr. Soteris Demetriou, Prof. Alessandra Russo, …”). If you are proposing your own project and have identified a potential supervisor from Imperial College London who you would like to work with, you should include them here.
- You should include a 3 – 4 page Research Statement on the project you have listed as your first choice, which will be evaluated as part of the application process. This should incorporate the following (irrespective of whether you are proposing your own project, or applying for an existing proposal):
- your initial ideas on the particular challenges you would be interested in addressing within the project in the context of Safe and Trusted Artificial Intelligence,
- a brief review of the relevant state of the art, identifying any limitations or open questions, and
- your initial ideas on what research you might carry out towards addressing these challenges, referring to existing research literature where appropriate.
- If you have listed your own project proposal as your first choice, then you should make clear its relevance to the theme of Safe and Trusted Artificial Intelligence.
- Under “Additional Information”, in the “Financial Support” section:
- For “How are you intending to fund your studies?”, you should select “Not sure”.
2. You should also complete a STAI Application Information Form. Failure to complete this form may result in your application not being considered for the Centre.
