A weekend Patrol standing camp with a series of challenges

The Emlyn training camp is your opportunity to experience the Emlyn without the pressure of being judged. The camp format will be similar to the normal competitive event, except that camp staff will be coaching instead of judging, and will be on hand to help as required to ensure you have a safe and enjoyable weekend. Whether you've never camped before or you're an Emlyn veteran, coaching will be tailored accordingly so that you can learn or improve your skills, and we've lined up some challenges to ensure a good dose of fun!

For Scouts, you’ll have the chance to camp independently (as a Patrol), with leaders on hand to help with tent pitching, cooking or any other aspect of camp (if you need them).

If you’ve never been to an Emlyn before, you’ll learn new skills to enable you to plan and run an enjoyable camp. If you have been before, you’ll receive coaching to develop your camping skills and gain insights into how to camp to a high standard.

There will be no marking or scores, no final placings and no trophy, no uniform inspection, no kit inspection and no pressure - instead there’ll be demonstrations from the camp staff, time for you to put things into practice, all followed up later by discussion of what you’re already doing well and where you could make adjustments to do even better.

During the camp, you’ll also get to know Scouts from all over the county through a mixture of games and challenges.

For Leaders, you’ll have the chance to join the camp staff for the weekend to experience Emlyn from ‘back-stage’. During the camp, you’ll take part in workshops, at which you’ll find out about the resources and support available for running district eliminator competitions, and discover what you can do to help a Patrol prepare for the Emlyn.

You’ll meet Leaders from all over the county, and find out about the various approaches taken by different districts when it comes to selecting Patrols to attend the county competition.

You’ll get to know about the 95-year history of the Emlyn, from its origins as a one-day tournament, through the trek-cart years of lightweight camping to the present-day weekend standing camp format.

You’ll also attend a Leader’s Forum, where we’ll be keen to hear your views on Emlyn and your ideas for how you’d like to see it evolve in the future.
