CIRCoRe Conference: Controversies in the use of
race and other human categorisations in the
South African higher education sector
 

Stellenbosch University (SU) will soon be hosting a conference, entitled “Controversies in the use of race and other human categorisations in the South African higher education sector”. This conference will be held at the Stellenbosch Institute for Advanced Study (STIAS) from 12 to 13 June 2024 and is organised by the CIRCoRe Workstream IV: Race, Human Categorisation and Science (RHCS).

The conference aims to interrogate the case for the use of human group descriptors in the sciences with a focus on the use of race and its attendant problems. This includes problems such as the questionable use of race in various disciplinary settings in the social and natural sciences from anthropology to forensic science. This conference also aims to explore the role of antiquated views about human beings and their groupings in the perpetuation of scientific racism in South Africa.

ras en ander menslike kategoriserings in die
Suid-Afrikaanse hoëronderwyssektor


Die Universiteit Stellenbosch (US) bied binnekort ’n konferensie, getiteld “Kontroversie oor die gebruik van ras en ander menslike kategoriserings in die Suid-Afrikaanse hoëronderwyssektor”, aan. Hierdie konferensie word van 12 tot 13 Junie 2024 by die Stellenbosse Instituut vir Gevorderde Navorsing (STIAS) gehou en word deur die CIRCoRe-werkstroom IV: Ras, Menslike Kategorisering en Wetenskap (RMKW) gereël.

Die konferensie het ten doel om die saak vir die gebruik van menslike groepbeskrywers in die wetenskappe te ondersoek met die fokus op die gebruik van ras en die gepaardgaande probleme. Dit sluit probleme soos die twyfelagtige gebruik van ras in verskillende vakkundige omgewings in die sosiale en natuurwetenskappe van antropologie tot forensiese wetenskap in. Die konferensie wil verder ook die rol van verouderde sienings oor mense en hulle groeperings in die voortbestaan van wetenskaplike rassisme in Suid-Afrika ondersoek.
