nGAP Lecturer in Biostatistics

The vision of the Division of Epidemiology and Biostatistics is to be a leader for epidemiology and biostatistics in and for Africa. The Division is a research-intensive academic entity

This position aims to recruit new academics as part of the New Generation of Academics Programme (nGAP) initiative, which is a prestigious programme under the Department of
Higher Education and Training, which involves the recruitment of highly capable scholars as new academics. This appointment comes with substantial support from the DHET over
a six-year period. The appointment is also subject to the conditions as set by the DHET and must be read in conjunction with the nGAP requirements of DoHET. Full details about

Collaborating with researchers and actively contributing to the design and organisation of new research, including the preparation of research protocols, sampling methods,
questionnaire design and data handling procedures;
Undertaking statistical analyses of data from observational and experimental studies, interpreting the results and preparing the results for publication;
Contributing to disseminating research results through peer-reviewed publications;
Contributing to the preparation of new grant proposals;
Offering training and teaching in biostatistics;
Supervising postgraduate students;
Participating in managerial and administrative matters.

Master's degree in Biostatistics or Statistics with an average of 70% or above;
Demonstrated practical experience of data analysis using standard statistical software (Stata, SAS, SPSS, etc.);
Willingness to learn and understand research needs specific to various clinical areas that include infectious diseases, chronic diseases of lifestyle and injuries;
The applicant should aspire to an academic career as a biostatistician and pursue further academic qualifications;
Be 40 years of age or younger;
Show evidence of eligibility to undertake postgraduate study at doctoral level or postdoctoral level;
A willingness to commit to placement at the appointing university for the full six years of the programme.

Experience in teaching biostatistics in health and postgraduate student supervision;
Experience in biostatistical consultation with health researchers;
Co-authorship of scientific publications.
