TSFC 2023 RECAP

2023 Challenge

More airlines, more flights, more innovations to help make flying greener. The TSFC 2023 challenge was scheduled between 15 May – 28 May 2023 in which 22 participating airlines implemented their most sustainable solutions and competed for awards in 31 categories.

LOOK WHO JOINED

In total 22 airlines participated, operating 72 round-trip short-, medium- and long-haul flights.

Rules

  • The TSFC flights took place in the last two full weeks of May – from 15th to 28th May
  • Only solutions that are actually implemented in TSFC are eligible for Awards
  • Participating airlines should submit their full list of solutions to qualify for Awards
  • Flights are to be a round-trip, including turnaround, using an existing route
  • The round-trip flight needs to be a subsequent flight with the same registered aircraft (if operationally possible)
  • The scope for the Flight Impact Awards covers “below the wing” ground operations and flight operations
  • Three distance categories: Long Haul (5,000 - 10,000 km per flight), Medium Haul (1,500 - 3,000 km per flight), Short Haul (less than 1,500 km per flight)
  • Short Haul flight submissions are only eligible when the destination cannot be reached by alternative transportation within 4.5 hours (measured from airport to airport
  • There are two main Award types: ‘Flight Impact Awards’ (focused on sustainability impact) and ’Challenge Contribution Awards’ (focused on adoption, innovation and collaboration)
  • There are subcategories for both “Flight Impact Awards” and “Challenge Contribution Awards”. Airlines are encouraged to participate in multiple categories

OVERALL AWARD CATEGORIES

What are the different categories and generic description of rationale how we came to these categories.

Lowest CO2 emissions

We are on a mission to recognize the airline that performs the lowest CO2 intensity flight, in efforts to tackle the biggest environmental challenge faced by the aviation industry. Whether it's a short haul (<1500km), medium haul (1500-3000km), or long haul (5000-10000km) flight, the airline with the least carbon emissions in a round-trip flight in the distance category will be awarded.

Jury

The jury is critical in the success of the challenge because we aim high, and want to solve one of our biggest challenges the industry has faced ever before. This can only be achieved if it transcends beyond individual interests. Therefore a respected and objective jury will be key. We aim for a small group of six jury members consisting of scientists, thought leaders, and sustainability and industry experts with proper representation in terms of diversity. We feel that this list cannot be complete without someone representing the next generation, someone that feels the urgency of this initiative and can embody that. The jury will consist of enthusiastic and engaging constructive critics. The role of the jury would be to hold us a mirror and to provide constructive feedback. Secondary it will be to challenge us to go further, inspire us, offer us a fresh perspective on our own industry and maybe even help create fruitful connections.
