We seek a highly motivated Senior Research Associate with experience in computer modelling to assess the relative impact of climate change and ozone depletion on the Southern Ocean CO2 sink during the period 1950-2100. The Southern Ocean is one of the most important and variable sinks of CO2, yet it is also one of the least well understood.
You will conduct and analyse model simulations that are designed to isolate changes in GHG and ozone based on model hindcast and projections of the UK Earth System Model. The work will concentrate on understanding and quantifying the role of changes in physical transport in response to the strengthening of the winds and other changes in atmospheric conditions using model simulations done with the NEMO-PlankTOM12 global carbon cycle model at two resolution (2x2 and 1/4x1/4 degree). You will also design, with the help of collaborators, a small number of additional model simulations to test the influence of changes in ecosystem functioning, test responses to changes in extreme environmental conditions, and test additional hypothesis emerging from their own findings. You will develop metrics based on emergent properties to verify the validity of the model simulations using a range of observations and to gain further insights.
With a PhD in carbon cycle science, climate change or related aspect you will have experience of independent research in this field, including both the use and interpretation of observations and of model results. You should have excellent analytical and technical skills, preferably with the ability to manipulate large datasets and to conduct your own model simulations. You should also have excellent oral and written communication skills, and experience of presenting and writing-up research results for publication in peer-viewed journals. You should have the ability and desire to work within a research group and be a team player; and be able to meet all the essential criteria set out in the Person Specification.
This post is available from 1 November 2021 on a full-time basis for a fixed term period of 2 years. Part-time working requests may be considered for this post (minimum possible hours available are 80% FTE).
