The Bristol Healthy Schools team at Bristol City Council are a dedicated team of Public Health professionals who work on improving children and young people’s health and wellbeing in the city. The service provides expert guidance to schools on identifying and addressing a wide range of health and wellbeing priorities, from relationships and mental health to physical activity, healthy eating, and oral health. | Services | Offer Healthy Schools Programme is free and will provide all schools with: Access to the Bristol Healthy Schools website with useful resources and guidance to support schools to make health improvements. A regular newsletter, packed with advice, guidance and information about opportunities that exist to support schools in improving health and wellbeing, such as high-quality staff training and events. Access to the Bristol Healthy Schools Network, to connect and learn from other schools who are working on the whole school approach to teaching and promoting health and wellbeing. An individual School Community Health Profile with detailed and up-to-date health data for each setting, to help schools identify health and wellbeing priorities for their school community. Access to a free Award Scheme which guides schools to establishing the right foundation for a happy, healthy school environment. Support from dedicated Healthy Schools team and expert topic leads, via email and phone, for advice and guidance, e.g. on completing awards or embedding best practice. In addition, some schools (4th and 5th quintile primary and secondary schools, alternative education settings and special schools) will, if needed, have access to two visits (face to face or virtual) for support with identifying and working on health priorities, including Healthy Schools awards. Improving the health and wellbeing of children is an important priority locally because healthy and happy children are more likely to learn and achieve. By taking part in the Healthy Schools Programme, schools can hope to achieve the following key outcomes: Improved pupil attendance, behaviour, and attainment Pupils who are more physically active Pupils who eat a healthier diet Pupils and staff who are happier at school These outcomes are achieved through improved policies and practice across the school on a range of areas related to health and wellbeing, from the physical and social environment of the school to the behaviour, skills, and knowledge of all individuals within the school community. The Heathy Schools Award Scheme gives public recognition to schools for the hard work they undertake to improve the health and wellbeing of the whole school community. Many aspects of the award scheme align with Ofsted requirements, giving schools plenty of evidence they can use to demonstrate key Ofsted requirements.
