About

Welcome!

I’m Stuart J. Turnbull-Dugarte – I am an Associate Professor in Quantitative Political Science in the Department of Politics and International Relations at the University of Southampton. I received my PhD in Political Science in 2020 from the Quantitative Political Economy department at King’s College London.

In 2023, my contributions to political science were recognised by the European Consortium of Political Research (ECPR) who awarded me their annual “Rising Star Award”.

My research lays at the intersection of political sociology, comparative politics, and behavioural science. I teach in the areas of quantitative methods, political psychology, and comparative European politics.

This research has been published and is forthcoming in, among other outlets, the American Political Science Review, the European Journal of Public Policy, European Journal of Political Research, the Journal of Politics, Political Psychology, and Political Science Research & Method.

Currently, I am an Associate Editor at Public Opinion Quarterly & the European Journal of Politics and Gender, and also sit on the editorial board of the Journal of European Public Policy and Electoral Studies.

I am very proudly a first gen student and I dedicate part of my time to mentoring other first gen students in their journey through university life. I am also very keen on normalising transparency on issues related to poor mental health in academia & talk about my own struggle with depression (#ihadablackdog), anxiety, and the Velvet Rage openly. If you are in need of support, I am readily available to talk.

When I am not teaching or wrangling data into a ggplot, you can normally find me either travelling, watching films from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, listening to Taylor Swift, and/or drinking a flat white or tropical IPA
