Biodiversity loss is advancing at an alarming rate, putting our entire world in danger. Currently a new post-2020 global biodiversity framework (GBF) is being negotiated under the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) which aims for a transformational change to safeguard biodiversity. It is also crucial that the framework address underlying drivers of biodiversity loss which includes trade. Trade is an indispensable part of sustainable development and sustainable trade can contribute to achieving biodiversity objectives. Yet, in the current stages of the negotiation of the framework, the issue of trade is not properly addressed.

Under this scenario, UNCTAD and the International Trade Centre (ITC) will co-organize a session exploring the potential of trade for the post-2020 global biodiversity framework and the role of voluntary sustainability standards for biodiversity conservation and sustainable use. It will also explore the different tools that have been developed to address the issue of trade and biodiversity including trade data on biodiversity-based trade and a self-assessment tool that can be used by companies.

The session intends to provide the outcomes of the two trade and biodiversity webinar discussions that took place last year. A BioTrade partner government will also present its reflections on the issue. It will then be followed by an introduction of trade and biodiversity tools and platforms of UNCTAD and ITC that can be useful and provide information to Parties for their reporting to the new global biodiversity framework.

The session will:

1. Increase awareness for CBD parties and participants of the post-2020 lobal biodiversity framework process on how sustainable trade plays a critical role in safeguarding biodiversity

2. Disseminate the tools and platforms that can be used in the area of trade and biodiversity.

This hybrid session is part of the official side-event of the Resumed sessions of the twenty-fourth meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA 24), the third meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Implementation (SBI 3) and the third meeting of the Open-ended Working Group on the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework (WG2020-3) under the CBD which will take place in Geneva, Switzerland. All registered participants are invited to attend the event. Government representatives, international organizations, businesses, academia and all interested stakeholders working in the area of trade and biodiversity are also invited to register and join virtually.

This side event is organized under the Global BioTrade Programme “Linking trade, biodiversity and sustainable development” with the financial support of the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs SECO.
