Welcome to the council's coronavirus information and advice newsletter

Hello resident,

Numbers of COVID-19 cases and infection rates are still reducing in all areas of Bristol. The city's infection rate is now 82 new cases per 100,000 population (data from February 20 to February 26). This is lower than the previous seven days (109 new cases per 100,000) and is below England’s infection rate of 91 per 100,000 population.

Yesterday (Wednesday 3 March) marked one year since Bristol registered its first confirmed case of COVID-19 as the city began its response to the pandemic that has swept the globe.

During that time, over half a million tests have been taken with 29,500 positive cases being recorded. Sadly, we have lost 563 people to this virus in the last twelve months. Every one of them will be remembered, and to everyone who is grieving, I send my deepest condolences.

I’d like to thank you all for your continued efforts to protect lives, help the vulnerable, limit the spread of the virus and support one another throughout the pandemic – it has been a source of city pride.

I know many people are looking forward to the coming months where national restrictions will begin to ease, allowing us to spend quality time with friends and family. However, we want this unlocking to be for the final time. National lockdown restrictions are still in place for now, so we must work together and continue to adhere to the guidance.

Finally, we look forward to welcoming back all school students on Monday (8 March) and are working closely with school leaders to make sure we have the correct safety measures in place. We will continue to support school staff, parents, young people and children in this transition.

Take care,

Marvin Rees, Mayor of Bristol

Census 2021

The census is a survey about all the households in England and Wales, and the next one takes place on Sunday 21 March 2021.

By taking part, you can help to inform decisions on services that shape your community, such as schools, doctors’ surgeries and bike lanes. Census 2021 will also provide fresh information to improve our understanding of the pandemic.

Because these things matter to us all, everyone needs to complete the census. You can fill yours in online as soon as you get your access code in the post. You can also request support for yourself, or someone else, including a paper version, different languages, or accessible guidance.

There is a dedicated contact centre for help over the phone, in a web chat or on social media. Visit www.census.gov.uk, or call 0800 141 2021. There are also local support centres available on the census website

COVID-19 testing sites in Bristol

It’s still important to get tested if you have COVID-19 symptoms. Symptoms include a new continuous cough, a high temperature or a loss or change to your sense of smell or taste.

We have just opened a new testing site in the city at 100 Temple Street, BS1 6AG, for people who have symptoms. We have also upgraded the site we share with South Gloucestershire Council at BAWA Leisure Centre, BS34 7RG, from a mobile testing unit to a walk-through local testing site.

We also have four other sites at:

  • Hengrove Leisure Park, BS14 0HR
  • Netham Park in Redfield, BS5 9RZ
  • Rear of the Victoria Rooms in the city centre, BS8 1SA
  • Brislington Park and Ride, BS4 5RU (2.1m height restriction for vehicles entering the site)

If you visit one of our testing sites, please:

  • do not use a taxi or public transport
  • wear a face covering at all times, including going to and from the testing site
  • attend the test site alone where possible
  • go straight to the testing site and go straight home after – do not stop anywhere on route

If you have symptoms, please self-isolate and book an appointment as soon as possible at nhs.uk/coronavirus or by calling 119.

100km Get Active Park Challenge

Being in lockdown over the winter months has had a recognisable impact on the physical and mental wellbeing of many Bristol residents. The Bristol & Bath Parks Foundation is launching a new community fundraiser to get us all moving and enjoying the green spaces of the city again.

In March, April or May, set yourself the challenge of reaching 100km over one month with a daily walk, run, bike, buggy push, or whatever you like. Of course, remember to keep two metres apart from those not in your household or support bubble when you’re out exercising as per current government guidance

The sponsorship you raise from the challenge will help volunteers with community nature and conservation projects, litter picking and community events.

  • £5 can provide tools for volunteers to improve habitats
  • £10 can supply equipment for one volunteer to litter pick
  • £25 can provide wildflower seeds to help re-wild a small area

The Bristol & Bath Parks Foundation asks for a £5 registration fee to confirm your place. The team will then be in touch with details about how to set up your fundraising page. Register and find further information on Eventbrite.
