Welcome to IWWCs

Cities worldwide now call themselves home to more than half of the global population, and account for

the vast majority of economic activity. The migration of humanity to cities in search of opportunity is not

only expected to continue but to accelerate, with the United Nations projecting that 68% of the people

will live in urban areas by 2050.
The rapid growth of cities presents a number of critical challenges which will need to be faced. As they

account for most of the global economic output, cities also consume the majority of the world’s energy

and resources, and produce more than half of the world’s waste. At the same time, cities struggle to

provide resources and opportunities to all of their inhabitants, and considerable relative inequalities

pose a threat to their stability and to the ability of urban management to keep cities both prosperous

and accessible to all.
To tackle these challenges, the Inclusive Wise Waste Cities (IWWCs) project aims to build a transnation

al network between The Netherlands and China, to develop integrated decision-making tools for the design of inclusive wise-waste city.
