Business-Farmers Roundtable on Repurposing Subsidies

Description

Repurposing Agriculture Subsidies Roundtable: Business - Farmer Dialogue
Monday, 20 March 2023, 15:00 – 16:00 CET (60 mins)
The consultation will take place virtually on MS Teams.

Businesses from across the value chain increasingly recognize the importance of repurposing subsidies in order to reduce systemic financial sustainability risks and to incentivize and enable them to meet their own sustainability goals. On top of that, the newly agreed Global Biodiversity Framework has highlighted the importance of subsidies in meeting global biodiversity goals under Target 18. WBCSD, in close collaboration with Just Rural Transition (JRT), identified three opportunities for business leadership: knowledge-building; business-led advocacy; and transparency and disclosure. WBCSD is working to further develop the role of business leadership in this agenda and map out businesses' potential next steps.

Our previous work has highlighted the importance of businesses engaging with and aligning with farmers on this topic, due to their proximity with how subsidies impacted the ground, as well as their vulnerability to the negative short-term impacts of repurposing subsidies. By convening this business-farmer roundtable, we aim to build a shared vision of future subsidies that benefit nature, climate, and people and identify the practical steps that businesses can take now to contribute to this agenda.
