Technical hearing on the draft scientific guidance on data required for the risk assessment of flavourings in foods

Summary

EFSA organised a technical hearing with interested parties on the draft scientific guidance on the data required for the risk assessment of flavourings in foods, during the public consultation for this document opened from 25 April until 19 June 2022.

The meeting was held virtually with approximately 90 participants, mainly from the private sector.

The aim of the meeting was to present the content of the draft guidance and to collect comments and input on its clarity, completeness and soundness, which will be considered by EFSA prior to finalisation of the guidance document.

Following the presentation of the different sections of the draft guidance document, remote participants were given the opportunity to ask questions to the EFSA’s experts and to the representative of the European Commission present at the meeting. Questions on the following topics were raised:

  • Regulatory requirements for the submission of applications on food flavourings,
  • Data required for the manufacturing and characterisation of food flavourings,
  • Data needed and methodology applied for the assessment of the dietary exposure to food flavourings,
  • Toxicity testing strategy for the assessment of food flavourings.

All the comments and questions were addressed orally by the EFSA experts during the meeting. It was clarified that after the event written replies will also be provided in the EFSA’s technical report which will address all comments received on the draft guidance during its public consultation. Participants were also reminded to submit the comments and questions raised at the meeting, via the online form of the public consultation by the given deadline.
