Letters to companies in the energy, clothing, and dairy sectors about sustainability claims

The Netherlands Authority for Consumers & Markets (ACM) has sent letters to more than 170 companies requesting them to check their sustainability claims, and if necessary, adjust them to bring them in line with consumer protection legislation.

Consumers and companies increasingly want to contribute to a world that also remains livable in the long term. That is why it is increasingly important to make sustainable choices. Consumers are more interested in the sustainability impact of products and services they purchase. They take this aspect into account in their purchase decisions. However, claims about sustainability are often seen by consumers as untrustworthy. Companies must be honest about sustainability, and can only use clear, correct and relevant sustainability claims.

That is why ACM in January 2021 published the ‘Guidelines regarding sustainability claims’. In these guidelines, ACM explains what rules apply when making sustainability claims.

These sector letters build on the ‘Guidelines regarding sustainability claims’. Sustainability claims must be presented in a clear, concrete, and unambiguous manner to ensure that consumers are not misled about the sustainability of the products and services.
