General Practitioners: Specialists in general practice

At its meeting on 21 November the Council unanimously agreed to support the recent joint statement from the RCGP, BMA and GMC that GPs should be considered specialists in General Practice and the GP and Specialist Registers held by the GMC should be merged.

The Council strongly felt that there should be a single specialist register and that this gives the right signals in terms of collaborative working and breaking down barriers between primary and secondary care.

The Academy recognises that to do this will require legislative change and therefore joins the RCGP and BMA in the call for the Medical Act to be changed at the earliest opportunity.
