Arup and the Ellen MacArthur Foundation are proud to introduce their new Circular Building Design Toolkit during Glasgow’s COP26 climate conference

Buildings account for 37% of global greenhouse gas emissions, with construction materials losing around 95% of their value during demolition. Designed to help building designers, construction clients and asset owners and operators, the tool provides a practical framework and tools to enable stakeholders across the building lifecycle to optimise assets for circularity.

Developed by Arup and the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, the Circular Building Design Toolkit brings together strategies, case studies and tools for designing more circular buildings, meaning reduced waste and carbon for a healthier planet and healthier people.

According to Martin Pauli, Arup’s Europe Foresight leader, the toolkit will kick-off a new era of Circular Design. “The Circular Building Design Toolkit is the result of an outstanding team effort from our practitioners across Europe, building on our deep-domain expertise across the built environment. The toolkit will guide decision-making in our projects and unlock value for our clients, with plans under way to develop a wide range of services around the toolkit”.

The toolkit will be introduced at an upcoming session into the Business Case for Circular Buildings on Tuesday 9 November in the Blue Zone, alongside the World Green Business Council. Richard Boyd, Senior Engineer for Arup, will introduce the Circular Design Toolkit at the event. Arup's Europe chair Eva Hinkers, who directs Arup’s relationship with the Foundation, will also take part in a follow-on panel discussion. You can view the session here.

The future of design is circular: the new Arup and Ellen MacArthur Foundation Circular Building Design Toolkit is a step-change to help actors across the real estate industry to unlock the value generated by a circular economy towards a more sustainable built environment, including designing out waste, maximising the lifecycle of products and materials and maximising revenue. ” Eva Hinkers Eva Hinkers Director

“The WGBC network is committed to pursuing resource efficiency and circularity across our buildings and infrastructure”, said WGBC CEO Cristina Gamboa. “The principles of the Circular Economy are an imperative for developing and regenerating our built environment. WGBC supports Arup's Circular Building Design Toolkit in providing a practical framework to guide impactful design decisions”.
