Mariupolis 2 (18) + ScreenTalk

New East Cinema

A man stands amongst the wreckage of a city

The last work by Kvedaravičius, who was killed during the siege of Mariupol, Ukraine, last March, documents the everyday horror of war. His fiancé escaped with and released this unforgettable footage.

Mantas Kvedaravičius's camera documents life stuck between mundanity and horror in the besieged city, in long, observational shots whose movements and cuts are often dictated by the threat of shelling. The film's vignettes paint a series of portraits that together construct a powerful account of the unspeakable horrors Mariupol was subjected to. As such, Mariupolis 2 is an urgent reminder of what may be cinema's greatest tool – its ability to serve as testimony and transform spectators into witnesses.

After Kvedaravičius was killed by enemy forces, his partner and co-director Hanna Bilobrova finished Mariupolis 2 together with editor Dounia Sichov.

This screening will be followed by a ScreenTalk with co-director Hanna Bilobrova, producer Uljana Kim and editor Dounia Sichov, hosted by Kateryna Khinkulova.
