Water environment workers are found in organisations where there is a responsibility to manage the impact of water environments, natural or manmade, on the land and surrounding businesses and homes.

The broad purpose of most jobs in this area is creating a safe environment where the public can enjoy our water environments and the surrounding land and buildings, whilst protecting the environment, and creating habitats for species to thrive.

This apprenticeship would suit anyone with an interest in rivers, coasts (the sea), lakes, wetlands, canals and reservoirs and all the habitats and species that thrive in these environments.

The course has four pathways which allow it to be tailored to different types of role, these include; working with volunteers, responding to flood events, heritage assets and water level management.

Progression Options

Progression from this apprenticeship could lead to higher level qualifications in ecology, environmental science, water management, countryside management and a host of roles with a variety of organisations such as the Environment Agency or National Trust.

Entry Requirements

There are no entry requirements, but course entry is subject to a successful interview and successful completion of an English and math initial assessment, and if you have not achieved a grade 4 (C) in GCSE English and maths, you will work towards a functional skills qualification during your learning.

Spotlight

I have gained a sound knowledge of so many aspects of the countryside, including native tree species, freshwater fish and flora and fauna, as well as learnt practical skills in things like hedge laying and conducting habitat surveys. I’ve also done work experience with Natural England at a local nature reserve.
