CLWSTWR, RIFA & CAF PRESENT:
ANIMATION AND THE CLIMATE EMERGENCY

Clwstwr and Cardiff Animation Festival are joining forces with the Arts and Humanities Research Council’s (AHRC) Research in Film Awards (RIFA) for an afternoon of screenings, talks and networking on environmental sustainability in the media industry.

The sessions are an opportunity to be inspired by content and films which are already raising awareness and advocating for change, as well as participate in discussions about ways in which the climate emergency can be communicated to different audiences using animation.

From animators to content commissioners, academic researchers to production researchers – we'd love to welcome you along for an afternoon of change making thinking.

Event schedule:

1:00-2:00pm Networking buffet lunch (V)

2:00-3:15pm Screenings and Q&As

An opportunity to watch and discuss animated content for adults and children communicating the climate crisis and how we can help to fight it. We will screen two RIFA-nominated short films:

A Stork’s Journey (5 mins)

Following the migration of white storks as they navigate man-made perils, this film invites viewers to fly with storks as they migrate from Germany to Sudan, navigating perils including pollution and pesticides.

The Promise (7 mins)

This film follows a young girl who introduces nature to her city and discovers how, to rewild the world, she must first rewild herself.

The above films will be followed by a Q&A with the animator and illustrator of A Stork’s Journey Karrie Fransman, and the writer of The Promise the New York Times Best Illustrated Book of the Year, Nicola Davies, from which the film is adapted, hosted by Clwstwr Producer Greg Mothersdale.

Following this we will screen content and have talks about:

Obki (Clip)

Evgenia Golubeva will talk about writing for Sky Kids original series Obki, about an alien on a mission to save planet Earth.

Press Go (Pilot)

Lewis and Hannah Vaughan Jones of Lewnah, creators of Clwstwr-supported project Press Go, an engaging news programme for young children, will screen a new pilot and discuss the project.

The above clips and talks will also be followed by a Q&A with Evgenia and Lewnah, hosted by Clwstwr Producer Sally Griffith.

3:15-3:45pm Coffee and cake (V)

3.45-5:00pm Planet placement and communicating the climate emergency panel

Join Emma Peddie of the BBC Sustainability Team, BAFTA-winning director Steve Smith of Picture Zero Productions, and Jonathan Tremewan, a producer on BBC Bitesize's The Regenerators, in conversation with Clwstwr's environmental sustainability lead Greg Mothersdale, as they discuss ways we can place the planet and communicate the climate emergency in the work that we do. The session will include clips from the BBC and So Hot Right Now, a Picture Zero short animation (5 mins) for WaterBear.

We encourage questions and interaction from the audience.

5pm: Event Ends

We would also love you to join us in the morning from 10am for a visioning session designing the perfect green workspace for the future of animation, VFX, games and post-production, and how we can make it a reality in Wales. More info here.
