Technical hearing on the draft scientific guidance for the preparation of applications on smoke flavouring primary products

14.00-18.00 (CET)

EFSA organised a technical hearing with interested parties on the draft scientific guidance for the preparation of applications on smoke flavouring primary products, during the public consultation for this document opened from 5 October until 16 November 2020.

The meeting was held virtually with more than 90 participants, mainly from the private sector.

The aim of the meeting was to present the content of the draft guidance and to collect comments and input on its clarity, completeness and soundness, which will be considered by EFSA prior to finalisation of the guidance document.

Following the presentation of the different sections of the draft guidance document, remote participants were given the opportunity to submit questions in writing via a dedicated tool to the experts from EFSA and to the representatives of the European Commission.

More than fifty questions were raised mainly on the following topics:

  • Regulatory and procedural issues related to the submission of applications on smoke flavouring primary products,
  • Clarifications on the chemical characterisation of a smoke flavouring primary product,
  • Queries on the reporting of uses and use levels for smoke flavouring primary products in the different food categories to assess dietary exposure,
  • Comments and questions concerning the approach for the genotoxicity and toxicity assessment of smoke flavouring primary products.

Most of the comments and questions were discussed and addressed by the EFSA experts and Commission representatives during the meeting. It was clarified that those queries that remained pending, will be addressed in writing after the event in the context of the EFSA’s technical report which will include all comments received on the draft guidance during its public consultation. Participants were also reminded to submit the comments and questions raised at the meeting, via the online form of the public consultation by the given deadline.
