EU leaders agree on MFF and Recovery Package

After a five-day European Council meeting, the EU leaders have agreed on a proposal for the next Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) and the Recovery Package which they presented on 21 July. Overall, they suggest a 1074.3 billion Euro MFF and a Recovery Package of 750 billion Euro. Compared to the Commission proposal from May 2018, the overall MFF is reduced (previously 1100 billion Euro) and the Recovery Package has a higher share of loans than grants.

Creative Europe is brought back to 1.64 billion Euros which is the same level as in the Commission proposal from May 2018. This is an increase of 7% compared to the budget put forward by the Commission two months ago (1.52 billion Euros). Although this is a positive sign towards the cultural and creative sector, it is still far from the doubling of the Creative Europe budget (to 2.8 billion Euros) that the sector and the European Parliament have continuously advocated for.

However, the MFF and the Recovery Package are not a done deal, yet. The MFF and the Recovery Package will still have to be approved by the European Parliament.

Corona, solidarity and the digital cage

Simone Dudt (EMC) is joined by Silja Fischer (IMC) and Giambattista Tofoni from EJN to discuss about the effects of the Corona crisis for the jazz field and on solidarity in Europe and how live concerts can survive the crisis. Their exchange on the help mechanisms by the different countries and the upcoming EU budget, shows that there is a real need for decision makers to invest in music.
