A trauma-informed approach across Enfield
Enfield Trauma Informed Practice in Schools and Settings (E-TIPSS) is a partnership initiative across Enfield to help children and young people, and the adults caring and working with them. The ambition is to implement trauma informed approach through aligning our work with the Attachment Regulation and Competency Framework (ARC).
This is providing a consistent structure, language and approach for use across settings and the partnership. E-TIPSS and applying the ARC Framework (PDF, 132.16 KB) is a preventative approach and applied when planning the routines of the day and thinking about:
- our ethos and environments
- delivering the curriculum
- developing policies
- communicating with and supporting our children, our families, our staff and our whole community
The E-TIPSS offer has a Universal, Enhanced and Implementation offer which is continuing to develop based on the feedback from schools and the E-TIPSS partnership.

Universal
- Central E-TIPSS briefing (1/2 day)

- Materials, resources and support for the school's own E-TIPSS lead to share a brief E-TIPSS/ARC introduction session with their school community

Available to schools/settings once a member of SLT has attended the two day Central ARC Framework training.
Implementation
Whole school community training on complex trauma and the ARC Framework with an 'onboarding meeting' prior to the training and a follow up 'launch meeting'. There is an expectation that data will be collected throughout.
Half termly consultation sessions (3 hours) - to be used flexibly.
- Support with E-TIPSS Audit Framework
- Support with the development of TIP implementation plan and identify initial outcomes for the school
- Further training and support for the school staff or parents/carers
- Review/evaluation
For 2021/22, the Educational Psychology Service (EPS) was commissioned to provide the leadership element of the E-TIPSS. This has included a senior educational psychologist for Social, Emotional and Mental Health (E-TIPSS Lead), and an assistant educational psychologist (E-TIPSS Project Support) with the support of the ARC Consultant, Kati Taunt.
An E-TIPSS partnership has developed and there are now 22 fully trained E-TIPSS/ARC Champions across school facing services. It is the E-TIPSS Champions who are best placed to deliver the training (alongside our ARC consultant), and implement the programme with schools. Their delivery is explicit through the E-TIPSS offer and is also integrated through the day to day work of the E-TIPSS partner services.

How services have adapted their work
- SWERRL has been developing its trauma informed approach for many years and has aligned its work with E-TIPSS / ARC Framework – weaving it into the thread of the Service and every aspect of the work they do, for example:
- The service has developed SAMI (SWERRL ARC Modelling Intervention) which is aligned to E-TIPSS/ARC Framework and includes modelling and coaching for school staff
- SWERRL’s psycho-educational scheme of work for onsite pupils includes modelling and coaching opportunities for school staff and is informed by E-TIPPS/ARC
- COSIE (Creating Optimal Safe and Inclusive Environments) training uses aspects of trauma informed work to join up the necessary knowledge schools need for the use of restraint with trauma-informed early de-escalation strategies coupled with giving school staff a 'trauma lens' when looking at a pupil who may present with challenging behaviour
- The Virtual School for LAC is rolling out ARC training and community practice support opportunities for colleagues across Children’s Services and Designated Safeguarding Leads and Designated Teachers for LAC in our schools
- The EPS is implementing E-TIPSS/ARC framework across the work of the service:
- Championing the ARC framework through the work in other services, for example ECASS, EASA, The Virtual School for Looked After Children, SWERRL and MYME
- Presenting ARC through the SMHL network
- Submitting ARC aligned psychological advice for vulnerable children with SEMH needs
- Ensuring strategies and guidance documents are E-TIPSS/ARC aligned, for example, the SEMH section of the Ordinarily Available Provision and the EPS Critical Incident Response for Schools and Settings
- The Early Years Partnership (including the Virtual School for LAC) are planning an introduction session to E-TIPSS/ARC framework for all EY settings and partners. It will provide input to help EY practitioners understand how young children may respond to difficult childhood experiences and how this can affect the way they relate to the adults trying to help them. It will give ideas about how to support children to calm down when they are upset or anxious. There will be a focus on creating trauma informed Early Years settings that will benefit all children, families and staff with links will be made between the EY Foundation Stage and the ARC Framework.
