A look around: New EUI researchers visit the Archives

Posted on 21 September 2020

On 17 September 2020, a guided tour to the Archives was organized as part of the induction programme for the new LAW Department researchers at the European University Institute (EUI).

The group included first-year PhD and LLM researchers and learned during the brief introduction about the origins, mission, role, and activities of the Archives. Furthermore, they got insight in the various services offered by the HAEU.

Highlight of the visit was the presentation of key EU-institutional documents pertaining to European law and its history, including original judgments and case files of the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU), files from the European Commission’s legal service, as well as documents from the Council of Ministers reflecting the origins of the CJEU. In addition, several files from private papers of renowned European lawyers and scholars, such as Fernand Dehousse and Mauro Cappelletti, were displayed to illustrate the diversity of law-related archival material. The visit ended with a tour in the archival deposits, where researchers were introduced to archival processing and long-term preservation.

Following the gradual re-opening of the Archives reading room after the Covid lockdown in Italy, this was the first group visit to take place at the Archives since early March. The visit was organized respecting the specific Covid security and safety measures at the European University Institute and similar visits are scheduled in the coming weeks.
