Erasmus+ Mobility Programme

Erasmus+ logo

Erasmus+ is the EU's programme to support education, training, youth and sport in Europe.

The 2021-2027 programme places a strong focus on social inclusion, the green and digital transitions, and promoting young people’s participation in democratic life.

Erasmus+ mobility has positive effects on educational, social, personal and professional development, in that it enhances knowledge, skills and attitudes, improves employability, helps confidence-building and independence, stimulates curiosity and innovation, fosters the understanding of other people, and builds a sense of European belonging.

EUI researchers and students can go abroad on study placements and traineeships (work placements, internships, etc).

More information about the way the EUI is implementing Erasmus+ can be found in the Erasmus+ Charter for Higher Education and EUI's Erasmus+ Policy Statement.

All PhD researchers and students who have been selected by the Entrance Board or their department to participate in the Erasmus+ programme are eligible to receive an Erasmus+ mobility grant, provided they meet the requirements of the programme. The grant is paid to you by the EUI, using funds provided by the European Commission. These funds are awarded annually to the EUI by the INDIRE (the Italian National Agency for the Erasmus+).

The grant is intended as a contribution to assist with the extra costs of studying/working abroad. It will not cover all the costs of your mobility, and should not be factored in to budgeting for core living expenses like rent, food etc.

The grant does not replace the standard monthly scholarship/stipend you are entitled to.

The monthly grant rates are set by the European Commission each year, not by the EUI. Your Erasmus+ grant amount will be based on various criteria, including:

  • The duration of your placement
  • The country in which your host institution is based
  • The type of Erasmus activity you are undertaking
  • If you meet the criteria for participants with fewer opportunities

The European Commission have confirmed the following Grant Rates for 2022/23 placements.

*any EU Member States and third countries associated to the Programme or third country not associated to the Programme.

The UK is no longer an EU Member State. It has also opted not to take part as an associated third country in the new Erasmus+ programme 2021-27. The UK will therefore not be taking part in the new programme as a Programme Country.

However, institutions may use up to 20% of the awarded Erasmus+ budget for outgoing mobility to non-associated counties all over the world. Therefore, limited budget for mobilities to the UK may be available. The International Mobility Office will inform you accordingly as soon as the Erasmus+ funds are received by the EUI from the European Commission.

In order to ensure equal and equitable access and opportunities to current and prospective participants from all backgrounds, there is an additional grant for those with fewer opportunities, for example:

  • Students with certified physical, mental and health problems
  • Economic disadvantage confirmed by ISEE (according to the indications clarified by the Ministero dell'Università e della Ricerca)
  • Students with minor children
  • Students who work
  • Students who are professional athletes
  • Students orphaned by at least one parent
  • Students who are children of victims of terrorism and organised crime

Students and graduates with fewer opportunities receive a top-up of the individual contribution allocated for Erasmus+ mobility as follows:

  • Long-term mobilities (2-12 months): €250/month
  • Short-term mobilities (5-30 days): €100/mobility, if the duration is between 5 and 14 days OR €150 if the duration is between 15 and 30 days

If you are an Erasmus+ participant with fewer opportunities, please contact the International Mobility Office to receive instructions about the documents you need to submit to prove your eligibility to the supplementary grant.

If you opt for a green travel (train, bus, carpooling, bike or other sustainable transportation) please be in touch with the International Mobility Office. You will receive a single contribution of 50 EUR as a top-up amount to the individual support and up to 4 days of additional individual support to cover travel days for a return trip, if relevant.

For participants with fewer opportunities, in particular those with needs related to physical, mental or health conditions, whose participation in the mobility would not be possible without extra or other financial support, it will be possible to apply for additional costs directly related to mobility that cannot be covered by the supplementary amount for individual support for participants with fewer opportunities. Please contact the International Mobility Office for further details.

The additional financial support that Erasmus+ provides to participants with fewer opportunities ensures that the programme remains inclusive and open to everyone. Participants who need to apply for an inclusion support allowance should do so via the International Mobility Office as soon as possible before the start of the academic year.

The OLS provides a range of interactive and engaging language learning activities to help you learn a new language or master a language you've already studied. The best part is that it's designed to cater specifically to the needs of each learner.

This means you'll enjoy a unique language learning experience, which you can embark on at your own pace.

If your mobility has duration of 14 days or more, you are required to take an OLS language assessment test in the target language before your departure. A few weeks before your departure you will be sent by email a login and a password to access OLS. The results of the language assessment do not prevent participants from taking part in Erasmus+ programmes. If you wish to improve your language proficiency you have the opportunity to follow online language courses before and during their time abroad. Access to the language course includes a great variety of interactive and tailor-made activities. Upon your return, you can take a final assessment, which allows you to measure the progress made during your stay abroad. The final assessment is not compulsory.
