The EUI is delighted to welcome Simon, one of its distinguished alumni, back to Florence. Simon obtained a PhD in Political and Social Sciences at the EUI in 1995.

Like the current holder of the Chair, Prof Hanspeter Kriesi, Simon is internationally known for the rigour and cutting-edge nature of his research. Simon is widely read and cited. He has an excellent track record in post-graduate research and training, has written four books and published articles in top US and European political science journals. He also regularly contributes to the public debate via the media.

Simon is an expert on comparative political behaviour and institutions, especially parties and elections, parliamentary behaviour, electoral systems, and European Union institutions and politics.  His research uses a sophisticated mix of quantitative and experimental methods, while taking theory and history seriously.

Prof Simon Hix said: “It is a great honour to be appointed as the Stein Rokkan Chair in Comparative Politics at the EUI, following in the footsteps of Mark Franklin and Hanspeter Kriesi. I am also excited to be returning to the Badia, where I have many fond memories from my PhD days, and I look forward to working closely with such outstanding faculty colleagues and doctoral and postdoctoral students.”

EUI President Prof Renaud Dehousse is looking forward to the return of the Institute's alumnus: "Simon Hix’s return at the EUI is a good illustration of the strong ties that bind Europe and the British academic world. We intend to continue nurturing those relationships in the future."
