Time: 13.00-14.00

Venue: Please book

Event Information

A hands-on workshop that aims to help people think about nature in a compassionate way – not as a place or entity ‘out there’, separate from people, but as something that we are all integrally connected to.

Through a series of progressively thought-provoking build questions, participants are encouraged to think not just about the ways in which nature contributes to their lives, but also the ways in which they affect nature; these builds are interspersed with mini lectures showcasing examples from around the world (many of highlight and draw from indigenous traditions). The point is not to make people feel guilty about how humans can change the environment – a tactic often used by conservationists – but to show that humans are just one of many species that change the environment in which they live, and that this can actually be beneficial in both directions as long as it is done in a balanced and thoughtful way.

The final build prompt is to collaboratively create a model showing a healthy relationship with nature, and the ensuing discussion will touch on tips for doing this – including, in particular, making an active effort to notice and appreciate nature everywhere it is found, in cities as well as in the countryside, in the form of charismatic species as well as often overlooked microfauna and -flora. It will encourage connecting to one’s local habitat, history, and traditions.

Exeter Community Initiatives (ECI)

Time: 11.00-14.00

Venue: Walk-In

Event Information

Exeter Community Initiatives (ECI) is a local charity registered in 1993 to improve the quality of life for people and communities in the Exeter area. ECI creates innovative practical solutions to social problems in the city. Since being founded ECI has created over 30 new projects, 7 of which subsequently became independent charities or community-led initiatives. ECI works with individuals; with children, young people and families; with groups, neighbourhoods and communities.  The broad outcomes of our work are improving mental, emotional and physical wellbeing; increasing a sense of belonging; and learning and developing skills.

The theme of our stand is ‘Making’ Meaningful Conversations where we explore the concept of Flow and the relationship of stilling and calming our minds through using our hands to ‘make’.  We will also be building connections through sharing skills and making together.  Join us to crochet, knit, sew and share skills.

Following a truly unprecedented year, now more than ever the value of compassion to our lives, institutions, and communities has been amply demonstrated.

We are bringing together academics, practitioners, campaigners, and activists, working in a number of fields, for a festival on compassion in its broadest sense, to coincide with the celebration of this year’s ‘World Compassion Day’.
