Exploding the Archive

We are delighted to invite you to the first round of talks in our series which will be held via Zoom. Exploding the Archive is a student led group which seeks to explore the current issues in archival research.

Each session will consist of a talk by one of our guest speakers followed by a Q&A. These sessions will not be recorded but supporting podcasts will be available on our blog page. Follow us on Twitter @explodearchive for more details.

Tuesday 22nd November 2022 13.00 -14.00 (GMT) – Dr Callum Easton – ‘Jack Tar’s Retirement: The Greenwich Pensioners’

Callum Easton is currently a Caird Research Fellow at the National Maritime Museum, studying Greenwich Seamen’s Hospital and the lives of its residents. He received his PhD in 2020 for his work on the Spithead and Nore mutinies of 1797. In all of his work, Callum seeks to draw links between maritime history and major themes in wider social and economic history.

The Royal Hospital Greenwich was, between 1705 and 1869, home to veteran naval sailors. Greenwich Hospital was not only a residential charity, but also a versatile tool of national policy. This talk has two objectives. Firstly, using sources ranging from paintings, caricatures, and poems, it will trace the changing portrayal of Greenwich pensioners from drunk and jolly old sea dogs to elderly heroes: custodians of the secrets of naval glory. Secondly, information drawn from the institution’s admission records will be used to compare the popular perceptions of Greenwich pensioners to the (rather more complex and surprising) reality.

Look forward to seeing you there.
