About this event

The ExCHANGE Collaboration are hosting this fabulous free in-person event focused on sharing knowledge, research and creative ideas around the care home sector. The event is taking place on 3rd November 2022, 12:00-16:30 at Reed Hall, Exeter. We will be exploring how social science researchers can work in partnership with care home stakeholders to improve the lives of those working, living in and visiting care homes. We will be asking questions like:

  • How can we use research to increase the happiness of care home residents?
  • What does a research-friendly care home look like?
  • How can we actively include care homes in our local community?
  • What makes a care home a “homely” home?

The Covid-19 pandemic has shone a public light on serious issues faced by the care home sector and made the wider population more aware of the drastic need to improve quality of life in care homes. We urgently need cutting-edge, innovative social science research to tackle the issues facing this sector. By thinking outside of the box, creative social research can find novel solutions to really show we care about our care homes and make them into better places to live and work.

This event will include presentations from top care homes researchers, as well as talks by dedicated local care home staff, owners, and relatives of care home residents. Alongside these presentations, the event will also include creative workshops, networking and small group discussions to highlight the issues affecting the care home sector and start seeking solutions together.

We will also showcase the work of the ExCHANGE Collaboration as an innovative example of how social science researchers and care home stakeholders can work together to improve care home practice through evidence-use.

This event will be of particular value to researchers interested in care homes research, healthcare professionals and staff working in care homes, care home providers, people who have relatives or friends residing in a care home, those caring for an elderly relative or relative with dementia, residents of care homes or anyone considering care home residence, or with an interest in social science and/or care homes research. We welcome all interested parties.*

This event is sponsored by, and forms part of, the ESRC’s 2022 Festival of Social Science.
