About this event

About this training

Settled's immigration advice service is part funded by the Welsh Government, who also recently commissioned us to deliver training to public authorities and voluntary sector groups on Migrant Rights. This training is part of the Welsh Government’s Migrant Integration Wales Project (MIW), which has been funded by the Asylum Migration Integration Fund (AMIF) since 2021.

Summary Aims of this training are as follows:

  • To ensure migrants living in Wales can receive services to which they are entitled and prevent public authorities incorrectly determining when an individual is ineligible for support due to the confusion surrounding statuses.
  • The training will increase awareness and knowledge about the rights of migrants in Wales - for both staff in public authorities and migrant voluntary support services. This dual audience should increase mutual understanding of the limitations and opportunities to provide support to migrants.

Outcomes & Outline

This bespoke training package will enable participants to:

  • Understand the Welsh Government’s clear expectation that public authorities will seek to support migrants in the community as far as they are able and within their powers, as a nation of sanctuary;
  • Know and understand what services migrants are eligible to receive, and the differences, in terms of entitlements, between those with different statuses;
  • Know and understand what services other migrants are eligible to receive;
  • Respond to queries with up-to-date, knowledgeable advice;
  • Know how to make accurate case work decisions;
  • Understand how migration status links to UK Government Immigration Acts;
  • Support and guide migrants to ensure they understand and apply to receive any services which they are eligible to receive;
  • Recognise the support needs of an individual, regardless of their immigration status, and where the Social Services and Well-being Act may need to be engaged to provide support.

Training will cover all migrant groups, with particular focuses on the latest on the EU Settlement Scheme and Ukraine schemes, and an overview of the Welsh Govt's new guidance on New Recourse to Public Funds.

We will discuss scenarios, and have plenty of time for your questions! Settled's OISC Level 3 immigration specialist will be part of the training panel.

Data protection

Settled will process all booking data in line with GRPR and our/Welsh Government privacy policy (English / Cymraeg). All discussion about case scenarios and Q&A will be strictly anonymised, as will all subsequent Q&A responses.

Organised by

Settled is a UK charity set up in 2019 to help EU citizens living in the UK whose rights were affected by Brexit. Settled worked hard to ensure as many as possible secured their immigration status before the deadline in June 2021, so that their lives here could continue. We now continue to provide information, advice and support to EU citizens, including people who are late applying to the EU Settlement Scheme (EUSS), or who have had their application refused. We also help when people are struggling to prove their immigration status or access rights and services. These can include the right to bring family members to join them in the UK, and to access welfare benefits, healthcare, etc.

Since March 2022, Settled also now provides advice on the Ukraine Family Scheme and Homes for Ukraine Scheme. This service is for Ukrainians in the UK or overseas, and hosts. We cover immigration rights and broader rights of housing, education, etc. (We do not assist in ‘matching’ directly).

Settled is registered to give immigration advice at OISC Level 3. We have a small staff team and network of 100+ volunteers based throughout the UK. We speak over 20 European languages, including Romanes for our dedicated Roma service, and Ukrainian and Russian. Helpful information is available on our multilingual website: www.settled.org.uk. Advice for EU and Ukrainian citizens is provided free of charge by email and phone (Mon-Fri 9-5). We also manage interactive Facebook groups in a range of languages.

Our core advice service is part-funded by the Welsh Government. In August 2022, we were also awarded a contract by the Welsh Government to deliver training to deliver training to public authorities and voluntary sector groups across Wales on migrant rights. This training is part of the Welsh Government’s Migrant Integration Wales Project (MIW), which has been funded by the Asylum Migration Integration Fund (AMIF) since 2021.
