About this event

What is participatory research?

Involving everyday people in the research process or participatory research is now well supported by most of the key funders of research in the UK. Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement (PPIE) is something you may be familiar with in your research bid development, but participatory research is much broader and aims to include lay community members in at multiple stages of the research process – from research question development, through protocol development, data collection and analysis to reporting and dissemination. It is not about simply increasing or improving recruitment and retention into studies, although we know that it does improve these things!

Why would I be interested in learning more about making my research more participatory?

Public participation in research is being increasingly used in health and social research but its benefits are less well appreciated in other academic disciplines. What we do know is that research bids which directly address the inclusion of members of the public in meaningful ways are stronger and may have increased chance of success. We also know that good participation by members of the public in research improves the impact of research and shows researchers interest in the public good of their research. All these things make research bids stronger and more competitive. Despite increased interest in participatory research many researchers lack good guidance on how to work with local communities.

Want to learn more about how to bring participatory research to life?

This half day workshop is intended to support researchers with participatory research better. They are for researchers from all disciplines (Humanities, Business and Management, Social Sciences, Science, and Applied Science) and will be co-led by a team of public facilitators with support from local person-centred organisation Every-One, and researchers from the Lincoln International Institute for Rural Health (LIIRH) and School of Health and Social Care.
