About this event

Future Matters: Wills & Lasting Powers of Attorney Workshop

We know that more than half of UK adults do not have a Will, and that many people are not sure how to make one. We are hoping to help put this right for residents in Islington by hosting our Future Matters “Wills & Lasting Powers of Attorney Workshop”

Join Future Matters Islington for a free online session about how you can get support planning your emergency and future care wishes, financial and legal affairs.

LEARN MORE AND ASK THE EXPERTS YOUR QUESTIONS ABOUT:

Setting up a ‘Lasting Power of Attorney’

Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs), are legal documents that allow you to choose one or more people to help make decisions or to make decisions on your behalf, should you be unable to do so. LPAs are a simple way of protecting your health, your finances, and the people you trust.

LPAs can be expensive to set up, but the Future Matters Islington service, run by Gentle Dusk in partnership with Age UK Islington, can provide free support to help you put one in place.

Making a Will

Your Will lets you decide what happens to your money, property and possessions after your death. You can write your will yourself, but you should get advice if your will is not straightforward. You must also make sure that it’s valid. A Will is a legal document so it needs to be written and signed correctly. If you decide to make your own Will, it’s best to seek advice first.

How can I get further support following the workshop?

Future Matters Islington offers free one-to-one support for putting in place an LPA and other advance care plans. These will enable you to appoint one or more people to help you make decisions or make decisions on your behalf to do with your health and financial affairs.

Future Matters is a free service to help you plan for the future

In the London Borough of Islington , Future Matters is funded by North Central London CCG and run by Gentle Dusk in partnership with AgeUK Islington.

Future Matters raises awareness of the importance of end of life care planning and provides practical support to Islington residents and those with an Islington GP, planning their future. Future Matters provides free guidance and one-to-one support to help you and your loved ones put together end of life plans. These outline how you’d like your financial affairs to be managed, your healthcare wishes and where you’d like to be cared for. This is important in either an emergency, such as an accident, or in later life, when you might not have the capacity, or the time to make your wishes known.

Future Matters can help you to put in place Lasting Powers of Attorney and Advance Care Plans. It also offers a forum to discuss thoughts about death, dying and bereavement through regular events such as Death Cafes. Future Matters encourages us all to take time to think about and plan for how we would like to be cared for: in an emergency or in the future. This is important whatever age we are, as none of us knows what the future might hold. For more information about how to access the service, visit: https://www.ageuk.org.uk/islington/our-services/future-matters-service/ This includes a BBC Ideas video "Should everyone have an End of Life Plan", featuring Gentle Dusk Director, Mireille Hayden amongst other experts in the field.
