Publisher agreements

Transformative Agreements

Transformative Agreements enable publishers to transition from a subscription or hybrid business model to full open access, over a defined timeframe. Publish open access in journals included in publisher Transformative Agreements at no extra cost when corresponding author meets affiliation eligibility criteria, as it has already been paid for. Identify affiliation during submission, ideally using your institutional email address on the publisher forms. Check if a journal is included in a Transformative Agreement the University signed up to using TA Lookup Tool.

Funding to publish in full open access journals

When submitting to a full open access journal that charges publishing fees, we strongly recommend securing funding before before you submit. Your research funder might pay publishing fees, if no funds are available in a research grant, contact Open Research upon submission to apply to the central open access funds. Central funds to pay publishing costs are limited so please contact us before you commit to paying anything. Identify peer-reviewed open access journals using Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ), many do not charge publishing fees.

Supporting open access initiatives

Open access journals initiatives

  • Open Library of Humanities - peer-reviewed "diamond" open access journals in the Humanities.
  • Annual Reviews and Berghahn OpenAnthro Subscribe to Open - we subscribe to journals, the publisher repurposes subscription income to fund open access publishing, enabling journals to flip to full open access without charging author publishing fees and at no extra cost to institutions.
  • SCOAP3 Consortium for open access publishing in particle physics. The Library pays a fee to SCOAP3, which helps fund conversion of key journals in High-Energy Physics to full open access without any author fees. Participating publishers reduce our journal subscriptions by the same amount, offsetting the costs.

Peer Community In

We are Supporters of Peer Community In, a non-profit Open Science initiative organised as "Thematic PCIs", disciplinary communities of researchers reviewing and recommending pre-prints, providing scientists with a place to evaluate, validate and promote their work that is separate and distinct from publication in a journal. PCI also publishes Peer Community Journal, a diamond open access journal (no fees to read or publish) publishing articles that have been reviewed and recommended by Thematic PCIs.
