My dearest Barry, you were my big brother in every sense of the word. Big in age gap, big in statue, big in influence. Your words of advise were always sage and given from a place of love. I loved the relationship we nurtured over the last few years and will miss our phone calls and visits. I will love you always. Rest in peace my big brother

Barry was one of my best friends for 46 years. He was funny, super-intelligent, very kind and caring and always interesting to be around, in general everything you could wish for in a friend. Virtually every great memory in my 20's and early 30's involved Barry. I lived in Four Winds, a large student house, with him for 5 or 6 years in the late 70's and early 80's.
Later I moved to Durban, but whenever I was in Cape Town, he was always first on my list of people to see.
He was my best man at my first wedding (I was living in the UK when he and Ali got married). So many other tributes here mention how great he was as a lecturer. I knew that from various people who had been his students but unfortunately I never saw him lecture.
When he phoned me to tell me about his diagnosis it was a real punch in the gut. I had always thought of him as my big brother and the concept of losing him was awful. I am so happy that he held on for so much longer than his doctors at first predicted, but that isn't really surprising. While the rest of us in Four Winds were wasting time and slacking around, Barry, on his own, built a 34ft wooden yacht and wrote his Master's thesis. His levels of energy were always impressive.
So goodbye old friend. You enriched my life in so many ways.

Barry, you have been an exceptional teacher that I have had the opportunity to meet among the many who taught me, coming from different continents.

Although economics appears to many more of a theoretical subject, although the most practical in our life, you demystified it to the point that it became one of my best subjects.

This gave me the confidence that later on saw me teaching economics to undergraduates, a mere computer programmer when I met you in the UCT MBA class.

I will never forget your favourite small island with its small activities, among which the barber and his haircut services. You used this to make it so simple and easy digest these very complex concepts of economics revolving around monetary policy, money supply, inflation, interest rate, exchange rate, unemployment...

You had a special way of creating distinctions through situations that immortalize your explanation and therefore generating easy understanding and comprehension of the concept in discussion.

Your favourite mention of Ferrari to draw attention of aspiring rich that most of us were made it more interesting to participate in your classes.

Your focus on macroeconomic analysis and the many models you exposed us to made the subject such an easy grab. Without being an economics major, it became so much interesting that I went on to focus on industrial policy as a pick for my thesis. I have never looked back again.

Thank you for playing your partition so well Barry! We shall miss you forever! Go well Teacher, and may the Almighty Creator grant you eternal peace and rest! May He grant your beloved family the strength and courage to overcome this moment of separation.

Dear Barry,

It's with profound sadness that I've recived this terribe news.

When I joined the Full time MBA in 2010, I was already an economics graduate. Thanks to your lectures and your pure passion, I discovered a new way of understanding the subject.

You so inspiring and I was so amazed by your personality and skills that I decided you'll be my MBA's thesis supervisor.

Barry, may you rest in peace and be graced by God.

Dear Jenna and family: my very sincere condolences. You All be proud of Professor Barry.

Barry was my professor between 2013-2014 at rsm. I didn’t really like the topic of economics but I did enjoy very much his lectures. My best way in memory of Professor Barry is to review all my notes of his lectures and read the textbook one more time. RIP

I was very fortunate to have Barry as my Economics lecturer while doing my MBA at UCT GSB. He was one of the best lecturers that I have ever had. As an Engineer, he awakened a love for Economics in me that lives on today. Barry's legacy will live on in the many lives that he touched and changed! Rest is Peace Barry.

I never had the opportunity to attend Barry’s classes myself, but my partner, who was fortunate enough to have Barry as a professor, invited me to join one of the Lunch with Barry sessions. I fell in love with how he explained the topics; he seemed to truly enjoy it, and that passion was transmitted to all of us. Barry struck me as a special person, and he will be dearly missed. Thank you for contributing to a better world by sharing your experiences in such a humane way.

Dear Barry,

In my country we say live (or act) the way you want to be remembered.

I will always remember you as an excellent and caring teacher as you explained with simple words and examples complex economical concepts while maintained a large crowd engaged with your humor and animations.

Very generous as you left us a legacy of narrated and animated materials and offered masterclasses to explain us the latest macroeconomic developments.

Thanks so much for being an inspiration and an example.

My most sincere condolences to your family. You will be always remembered.

Barry was my favorite lecturer at the GSB in 2004 and his ability to simplify the subject matter but keep it interesting through his various brilliant analogies or quotes was legendary. He was always positive and his description of economics as an onion will stay with me for life “increasing layers of complexity but they will definitely make you weep”. Barry touched many and now, 20 years later, I still think of and speak about him regularly. My condolences to the family in your loss, but his legend definitely lives on far and wide!!!!

Barry taught me economics at GSB in 2008 and was everything everyone says about him. When the pandemic struck and no one knew what was going to happen economically I dropped him a note asking for his insights. Within a week we had a zoom call with over 150 people attending from all over the globe to listen to his wise words. He was always generous with his insights and left a mark on all he taught. He will be missed.

It is with great sadness that I read of Barry's passing. I worked with Barry at the GSB, but on the admin side. He invited me to attend one of his lectures as the students were raving about his teaching. I must admit it was the first time I had sat in an Economics lecture and knew what was going on. He was an incredible lecturer, colleague and friend. He was voted Best Lecturer year after year.  Even though he was so ill, he gave a talk at our Alumni Reunion in October last year. A man of true courage. My deepest condolences to his wife and family. Hold onto his beautiful memories and may it bring you peace.

I can honestly say that Economics lectures with Professor Barry were something I looked forward to and he will always be one of my favourite and most influential lecturers.

His 'pile of money, pile of things' quote among so many others made Economics relatable and enjoyable. He genuinely cared that we understood and enjoyed what he was teaching which was evident in the effort he put into contextualising theories. He made us laugh, he made us think and he made us hungry for more.

He will most certainly be missed and legacy is entrenched in so many hearts and minds he touched during his lifetime. Having just lost my dad to Cancer, I know the journey is a difficult one. Sending much love and condolences to his family and friends.

Amazing man who gave so much of what he loved to so many. Was very lucky to have been lifted by Barry at UCT GSB. I remember some of his lectures word for word 25 years later …. And what they implied.  Rest gently Barry.

Barry you captivated us all in your Economics lectures at GSB. I scribbled down and hung on every word you said. I have let go of so many other notes, but I held onto yours and refer back to them often. Thanks for the mark you left on my life and for how you challenged us to think.

Barry had a sharp mind. I will always remember him alongside Anthony as they worked very closely together - as I have known them. Since I met him I was in awe of this larger than life and yet humble man - very knowledgeable and extraordinary professional and passionate about his work. The little time we interacted with each other is as if we have known each other for years and yet we had very limited interaction. A very respectful and honourable man. I knew him through my then work as a public servant in gambling regulation and him and Anthony as consultants. Rest well Barry and may the family be consoled that a great human being left an indelible mark and memories of humanity and professionalism.

Oh dear, oh dear,

I've had the privilege to be taught Economics from Barry as part of the EMBA20 cohort of RSM. In essence, we only came across him a few times over the span of half a year, but what impact those had on us... I remember walking in the lectures exhausted on Friday evenings, yet Barry never failed to make us crack on laughing while at the same time teaching with mastery complex notions. Was such a shot of life and inspiration actually at the end of long work-weeks. So sorry to hear about his passing.

Warmest condolences to the family & friends,
Eleni (EMBA20)

Thank you Barry for changing the way I think. Your lectures and ‘lunches with Barry’ remain unforgettable experience. Even now 10years after school I am still coming back to your lectures to look for guidance how to look at finance and economy. I will miss you.

Your light and humor will be always present. Thank you for sharing much more than your brilliance in economics. Oh dear!

Rest in peace Barry.

Barry will remain for me and our cohort, a legend. His presence and strength in tamming an executive MBA cohort of untamed wolfs ready to attack until his now classic cue of "count to 10 before you ask a question" remain a vivid story, I am still sharing with friends years after graduation.

His class was one of those I thought I would fail because it seemed it was flying at high altitudes for my taste, and got to love in the end and helped me and others become more competent readers of Financial Times too, for those of us who were borredering curiosity and ignorance.

He was trully a cool one and most of us still wanted to remain in touch with him and it looks like all of us will remain his walking legacy. The world is a better place today and years to come for his leadership and wit. Will miss you, Barry !
Barry made learning economics fun and relatable in his unique way that is super engaging and full of humor. He never fails to make the students paying attention in his classes and after every class, we will have something to ponder about. I am lucky for having the opportunity to learn from this brilliant man and I am sure many of his students share the same view.

Rest in peace.

It is impossible to do Barry justice in a short message. We were so lucky to cross paths with him. For those of us fortunate enough to be in one of his classes in Rotterdam, echoing Barry's phrases, or asking 'I wonder what Barry would think of this' was a cornerstone of the RSM experience.

He was unbelievably good at teaching his subject. And he was seriously funny while doing it. Thank you Barry.
