The London Marathon 2020 – I’m in for the running …

Schizophrenia is a solitary and frightening existence, not only for the person who cruelly suffers with the illness, but it impacts everyone close to them.

I know this, because my mum has been battling the illness for over 30 years.

Over the last few years the situation has become tougher, the help we could rely on at Hinchingbrooke Hospital has been taken away, like so many other departments in the NHS, cutbacks are having devastating effects on those who desperately need them.

Schizophrenia shows itself in many forms, the list is long and terrifying, but ultimately, it is a long-term serious mental disorder that impairs the normality of daily functioning. As a family, we deal with each situation and set back as best we can, but there are times when it becomes too severe for us to handle on our own, and we need professional help.

St Andrews hospital in Northampton is an independent charity providing intensive psychiatric care. In particular; Bailey Ward, which offers specialist services for women, with treatment covering short periods of rapid response over a maximum stay of around 10 weeks.

On more than one occasion, when my mum has been so seriously ill and showed no signs of improving, the staff have cared for her continuously for months and months on end, until she was ready to come home.

I’m not sure how we would have coped without them, a simple “thank you” never seems enough so that is why I’m lacing up my trainers and running the London Marathon 2020, to raise money for the ward that took care of my mum when she needed them the most.

I’m not setting a target figure, anything I raise will be welcome and greatly appreciated. I have seen first-hand, the effects on those living inside a secure setting for 24 hours each day, the staff are brilliant at doing things to keep each patient occupied, but I would like to raise some money to buy a few things to help stimulate the patients such as; board games, books, music, arts and craft-making supplies, anything to help both the patients and the staff have a slightly better day.

We are all aware that the resources for mental health are limited, but growing up around it has shown me how it has declined rapidly over the last few years. So many people, and so much need, it is heart breaking to hear the stories of others who suffer with mental illness.

With this in mind, anything raised will be gratefully accepted and will go to helping people who are being cared for in this specialist unit.

Thank you for reading my story, and I know my mum, and many others would like to thank you too.
