Details

The Controlling Migration Fund is designed to support local areas facing pressures linked to recent immigration.

The Fund will be available over the 4 years from 2016-17 to 2019-20, and is in 2 parts:

  • a local service impacts part of £100 million, to help English local authorities and their communities experiencing high and unexpected volumes of immigration to ease pressures on local services

  • an enforcement part worth £40 million to direct enforcement action against people in the UK illegally in order to reduce the pressure on local areas

In January 2018 the department announced that an additional £20 million, partially funded by the Controlling Migration Fund, would be distributed to all local authorities caring for Unaccompanied Asylum Seeking Children, to help build their ongoing capacity to support them. This amount was later confirmed to be £21.3 million and you can see details of the allocation for each authority.

You can see a detailed methodology for how the allocations were calculated and should consult the frequently asked questions if you have further questions about this funding. These documents have been developed in discussion with the Local Government Association and Regional Strategic Migration Partnerships.

The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government element of the Fund re-opened for bids on 10 August 2018, after a pause to review its operation. The deadline for bids is 1 October 2018.
