TRAINING VIDEOS

The following videos show how hairdressers can discuss key issues relating to sustainability and hair care with their clients in both roleplay scenarios and training videos. By exploring the content below, you and your team can become confident when talking about the Mirror Talkers Eco Tips with clients, and more generally on sustainability within the hair and beauty industry!

Note: Role play videos are examples of conversations between hairdressers and clients but does not necessarily constitute actual haircare advice for the actors involved.

HAVE YOU TRIED SHAMPOO BARS?

Shampoo bars are solid versions of traditional shampoos which typically contain 80% water. Rather than containing harsh chemicals, surfactants and detergents, shampoo bars are often made with natural oils, butters and gentle cleansers. Takeaway message: shampoo bars can reduce your plastic, water and energy footprint and will likely be gentle on your hair and skin.

HAVE YOU TRIED LEAVE-IN CONDITIONER?

There are many benefits to using leave-in conditioner including improving hair condition, saving on your utility bills and reducing your impact on the environment. If you haven’t already tried it, there’s no time like the present!

HAVE YOU TRIED DRY SHAMPOO?

Using dry shampoo can transform your haircare routine. Some people use it as a way to boost a shampoo several days. and others simply alternate shampoo and dry shampoo days. However you can use it, it can have a significant impact on the condition of your hair, on your bills and the environment! Takeaway message: dry shampoo is one of the best haircare products on the market for minimising water and energy usage and saving money.

SHAMPOOING TOO MUCH?

Most of us use too much shampoo and shampoo more often than is ideal or even necessary. Too much hot water and chemicals isn't good for your hair condition, skin, planet or your bills.

LESS SHAMPOO

Advice to use less shampoo especially for people who find they have dry hair. A routine involving shampooing twice (ie rinse and repeat) every day can dry it out. Shampoo can be harsh and may strip hair of its natural oils.  Takeaway message: You don't necessarily need to shampoo your hair so often.

LESS BLOW DRYING

Advice to blow dry hair less and instead try "rough drying" to almost dry (85-90%) and then using a brush to smooth into place.  Takeaway message: You can save time by letting your hair mostly air dry then, if you want, finish it off with a blow dryer or other styling tool.

HOT WATER

One of the most energy intensive things that we can do at home and in salon is run hot water. Using warm water can save money, improve the condition of our hair and reduce our environmental impact.

PALM OIL

Palm oil can be found across a wide range of products, including hair and beauty products. Here's how to discuss palm oil with your clients.

NOT ENOUGH TIME IN THE DAY

If your client lives a busy lifestyle, there's a great opportunity to explain how having a more sustainable haircare routine doesn't take more time or effort!

HEALTHY BACTERIA

The skin and hair contain a delicate balance of bacteria called the microbiome. Using harsh products, over-washing and using hot water can all damage the healthy bacteria that we want to cultivate for our skin and hair.

HARSH CHEMICALS

Whilst we are keen to avoid harsh chemicals on our skin and hair, its important to remove them from our cleaning cupboards and homes too.
