Research Transparency

How we developed the Make it Public strategy

Transparency about what research is going on, and what its findings are, is important for everybody including patients, service users, health care professionals, researchers, policy makers and the public.

Despite improvements in recent years, not all research studies are registered nor results reported publicly. In late 2018, the House of Commons Science and Technology Committee set the HRA a challenge to tackle poor practice in this area.

During 2019, we reviewed our approach to research transparency and set out to develop a new strategy. We formed an expert group, chaired by Professor Andrew George, to help us with that review and conducted a Make it Public consultation. We heard from over 700 individuals and organisations and their feedback have been instrumental in shaping our final strategy.
