Plans to transform The Old Town Hall in Hoylake into a mixed-use development featuring a cinema, café and fine dining restaurant as well as apartments have been given the thumbs up.

Hyglar Properties is behind the application to revamp the asset, which was built in 1898 to house Hoylake District Council. A small fire engine house was added in the 1930s and the buildings were converted for use as the local Job Centre in 1996 following a fire.

Under the proposals, the Old Town Hall would be known as Beacon Arts Village. The historic buildings would be retained and refurbished and a new five-storey extension would be constructed.

The ground floor of the original buildings would accommodate café, bistro and restaurant space, while the first floor would comprise a two-screen cinema, offices and commercial space.

The first floor of the new build extension would comprise 17 units aimed at artists and the upper floors would house 40 apartments.

Wirral Council planners gave the scheme the nod earlier this week, saying it would "ensure the most effective use of brownfield land".

"The scheme has been designed in order to retain and restore the locally important historic buildings and contribute to the development of and further regeneration of Hoylake town centre," a council document added.

"In addition the proposal will assist in the creation of new jobs associated with construction and then operation of the development."

Falconer Chester Hall Architects prepared the design and access statement on behalf of Hyglar.
