Elastomers Used in Electric Vehicles

This webinar will specifically discuss and address relevant challenges and solutions to very important transportation issues. The electric vehicle market is set to expand considerably leading up to 2030, as vehicle makers seek to reduce emissions.

The increased demand for electric vehicles will drive considerable investment in electric storage and power in the next few years.

This afternoon technical discussion meeting will examine the different requirements and challenges from such applications as suspension systems, drivetrain, and energy storge in electric vehicles, as well as design of rubber components.

The IOM3 Elastomer Group's Afternoon Technical Discussion Meeting (ATDM) series is the main platform for the technical and scientific community in the UK to discuss the use of rubber and elastomer materials. Utilising elastomeric materials in electric transportation will be of interest to a lot of people in the sector.

Three take away benefits for participants attending this event:

  1. Current trends of elastomer for electrical transportation
  2. Technical solutions to current problems
  3. Networking

Quiet cars don’t deserve squeaky weather seals

How the EV battery industry is changing and what this might mean for elastomers

Presented by Christopher Lyness, Battery Systems Lead, Vertical Aerospace

The battery industry is going through unprecedented growth as electric vehicles start to appeal to more consumers and make headway into new fields such as aviation. With ambitious timelines for zero Emission fleets in the coming years, investment in Battery technology is increasing and the focus is shifting from making the technology viable, to maturing it for the mainstream. This talk will discuss what this means for the associated technology inside battery systems and how this might accommodate the shift to better serviceability, sustainability,  ease of second life and recycling.

What use for polymers in Li-ion and solid state batteries?

Presented by Andre de Alemida, Process engineer, Solid State Battery Program, Saft

The influence of new mobility trends on elastomers

Presented by Marjan Hemstede-van Urk, Technical Manager, ARLANXEO

ARLANXEO is one of the world’s largest producers of synthetic rubbers and a wholly owned subsidiary of Saudi Aramco, a leading producer of energy and chemicals. ARLANXEO develops, produces and markets high-performance rubbers with sales of around EUR 3 billion in 2019 with a presence of 12 production sites in 9 countries, and 7 innovation centers around the world. Its rubber products are used for a wide range of applications: from the automotive and tire industries to the electrical, construction and oil and gas industries.

This presentation will highlight specific rubber developments for sustainable mobility. We all know that the automotive drive technology will change. Various OEMs have announced to stop further developments with respect to combustion engines and have accelerated their developments related to hybrid, electrical and fuel cell driven vehicles. These changes have a tremendous impact on the rubber industry, since they will affect many applications from the rubber tires to the sealing systems, from rubber hoses to anti-vibration parts.

This presentation will describe several of the developments ARLANXEO is working on to support the automotive industry entering this new era. Specific trends of importance for elastomers in future mobility are thermal management, electrification, light-weight and noise, vibration & harshness. General as well as more specific examples of these trends will be highlighted.
